The Baiterek Monument

1997 marks the year when Astana was proclaimed the new capital of the state, representing a new starting point in the country’s history.

Baiterek means “Tree of Life,” reflecting one of the universal mythological concepts of the world. The Baiterek Monument, with its location and compositional structure, expresses the cosmogonic views of the ancient nomads, according to whose legends the World River flows at the junction of worlds. On its bank stands the Tree of Life, Baiterek (Kazakh: Бәйтерек — “poplar,” also “support, protector”), with roots holding the earth and a crown supporting the sky. This Tree of Life serves as a model of the Universe: the roots of “Baiterek” correspond to the underground world, the trunk to the earthly world, and the crown to the heavenly world.

The initiator of the construction of Baiterek is the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The architect of this unique project is Akmurza Rustambekov.

In 2002, the Baiterek Monument was awarded the Grand Prix at the MASA competition by the International Association of the Union of Architects of the CIS countries. The author of Baiterek succeeded in achieving the goal of embodying harmony between the ancient spiritual culture of the Kazakh people and modern technologies, symbolizing the country’s aspiration towards the future.
